They detect proxy by first pinging the ip and then measuring time it took to receive xmlhttprequest package what was fired with javascript on client side .
Comparing those two, if proxy, ping ms is twice as small as xmlhttprequest ms, indicating that package went through more than one tunnels before reaching them. See PING ECHO request will never reach client, it's different protocol and will be bounced back from the proxy server instead.
