It works, depends on your tactics.
For example, a lot of spamming is actually done through SMS nowadays and make it look like it comes from example UPS, that they are expecting a package, but need to pay some fees, with a link to it. The link need to look legit, as well as the SMS (spoofing) and the site also. So you would need some knowledge in these fields, but the best lesson is always try & fail.
