The UAE may ban the use of cryptocurrencies

The UAE Central Bank has adopted new rules requiring payment tokens to be linked to the dirham, effectively banning the use of cryptocurrencies for payment.

Experts believe that this contradicts the UAE’s strategy to attract investment and could negatively affect the development of Web3 and crypto trading in the country.

NFT Sales Drop 44% Due to Meme Coin Frenzy

In the second quarter, sales of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) decreased by 44%, Apollo Crypto investment director Henrik Andersson told Cointelegraph. NFT sales fell from $4.14 billion in the first quarter to $2.32 billion in the second, according to CryptoSlam.

Andersson noted that Bitcoin fell by 15%, and many altcoins performed worse. Meme tokens have gained attention by stealing market share from NFTs.

The top manager emphasized that Ordinals also took away some of the popularity from NFTs. In the long term, Ordinals will take market share, especially with the development of layer 2 solutions for Bitcoin. However, activity in the Ordinals and Runes segment also declined, with sales totaling $116 billion in June, $191 billion in May, and $708 billion in April.

The largest NFT collection remains Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) with a capitalization of $344 million, followed by Mad Lads on Solana ($146 billion) and Milady Maker on Ethereum ($201 billion).

Bitcoin miners shut down equipment and sell reserves

Bitcoin miners have begun turning off inefficient equipment and selling reserves, a sign of their capitulation, a report from CryptoQuant says.

Experts noted that such periods are historically associated with minimum prices.

Miners' daily income has dropped from $79 million on March 6 to $29 million currently. The share of commissions in revenue fell to 3.2%, the lowest since April 8. The hype around Ordinals and Runes before the halving brought miners “tens of millions” of dollars.

The network hashrate fell by 7.7% after block reward cuts in April, which is the largest drawdown since December 2022, when the market bottom was recorded after the collapse of FTX.

According to CryptoQuant, daily outflows from miners' wallets reached the highest volumes since May 21, indicating likely sales.

The Whale Alert service reported the freezing of USDT stablecoins worth $8.5 million in a wallet on the Tron network at the initiative of the Binance exchange.

The blocking and stopping of all transactions at the address TDeUwUL74u67YH4Wz21z3u564aR18z7UCh occurred in the second half of June. The identity of the owner of the wallet has not been disclosed.

Scammers are stealing millions by posing as Coinbase support

Scammers posing as Coinbase support are stealing millions of dollars in assets from crypto traders. One of the victims lost $1.7 million.

The attacker contacted the victim by phone, posing as a Coinbase employee, and sent an email allegedly from the exchange's security service. The letter, signed "David Brown", claimed that unauthorized transactions were taking place from the victim's account and suggested that they go to a website controlled by scammers.

The victim became suspicious and entered only part of the key phrase, but this was enough to steal crypto assets.

Kraken and Coinbase Launch Crypto Security Standardization Initiative

US crypto giants Kraken and Coinbase have founded a new non-profit organization to protect the industry from security threats by developing consistent standards.

Kraken's website says the new organization, called the Blockchain Security Standards Council, aims to establish uniform security standards to improve trust in the industry. Founders also include Anchorage Digital, Bastion, Figment, Fireblocks, Halborn, OpenZeppelin, Ribbit Capital and Sentinel Global.

By the end of 2024, the Council plans to have industry-specific security standards and a robust audit process in place. It will also work with regulators to establish uniform requirements that protect consumers and encourage innovation.

This is not the first joint initiative for Coinbase and Kraken. In 2019, they established the Crypto Ratings Council to identify tokens that can be traded without regulatory oversight. However, this did not prevent them from being sued by the US Securities and Exchange Commission in 2023.

$100 billion of “dirty” cryptocurrency was sent to crypto exchanges over 5 years

The analytical platform Chainalysis reported that since 2019, about $100 billion of “dirty” cryptocurrency was sent to crypto exchanges, and almost 30% of these assets ended up on sanctioned services.

According to the report, a third of the “dirty” cryptocurrency comes from sanctioned services, such as the Russian exchange Garantex. The remaining funds are related to darknet markets, scams, ransomware, malware and internet bridges.

Experts note that most of the illegal funds are concentrated in stablecoins. In their opinion, international cooperation in the field of anti-money laundering (AML) measures does not produce the desired result.

Craig Wright's website contains a denial of his participation in the creation of Bitcoin

A legal notice has been posted on Craig Wright's website confirming that he is not Satoshi Nakamoto. This follows a case brought in 2021 by the Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA) against an Australian businessman. The organization filed the lawsuit to prevent him from suing developers and other members of the crypto community, as well as claiming intellectual property rights to Bitcoin technology.

In March, British judge James Mellor ruled that Wright was not the creator of the first cryptocurrency or the author of the white paper. Wright lied “extensively and repeatedly to the court” and “extensively” falsified documents submitted as evidence, the court said.

Users on social network X noted that Wright’s publication of the court release on his page is not a personal recognition of “pseudo-Satoshi.” However, the court prohibited Wright from initiating new proceedings based on “his false statements” or inducing third parties to do so.

Mike Brock: Trump tried to ban Bitcoin in 2020

Mike Brock reported on the social network X that in 2020 he participated in a meeting of the White House administration with the participation of Donald Trump and Steven Mnuchin. Trump then proposed banning digital assets, including Bitcoin, in the United States, but economists led by Mnuchin decided not to rush into this decision in order to preserve the country's competitiveness and innovation.

“Trump tried to ban Bitcoin in 2020 until Steve Mnuchin and a group of people in the administration opposed it. Trump doesn’t believe in anything but himself, and you’re wrong to assume that he can change his mind,” Brock said.

Brock added that Trump is not interested in Bitcoin, but sees crypto enthusiasts only as a source of funds for his election campaign.

Earlier, Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin spoke out against voting for politicians who support cryptocurrencies, believing that they do not understand their essence.

The organizers of a fraudulent cryptocurrency investment scheme were arrested in China.

Chinese police have detained eight people who ran a fraudulent investment scheme involving the Filecoin (FIL) cryptocurrency, causing investors to lose approximately $5.5 million. The criminals defrauded more than 10,000 victims across China by guaranteeing double returns on investments in FIL. Instead, they embezzled investors' funds.

The organizers of the scheme were sentenced to prison terms of three to five years and conditional release. They are also required to pay fines ranging from $28,860 to $34,360.

Cryptocurrency trading and mining are prohibited in China, so the authorities strictly suppress any illegal financial transactions related to cryptocurrencies to protect citizens from fraud.

Hong Kong police detained 4 cryptocurrency scammers

Hong Kong police have arrested four people suspected of using counterfeit banknotes to defraud $1.4 million worth of cryptocurrency.

Since October last year, 14 people have been arrested in such cases. This time the detainees, aged from 14 to 39 years, are suspected of fraud and possession of 5 thousand counterfeit banknotes.

According to the police, the detainees acted in a coordinated manner: two of them were engaged in the production of counterfeit banknotes and the organization of fake cryptocurrency exchange points, the other two received banknotes from a mini-vault and used a fake office. They showed victims stacks of counterfeit bills, showing only the top and bottom bills as real, and convinced them to transfer cryptocurrency.

The Federation Council approved a new package of laws on the circulation of cryptocurrencies in Russia

The Federation Council approved a package of laws regulating the circulation of cryptocurrencies, mining, the launch of an experiment on the use of cryptocurrencies in international payments and exchange trading in cryptocurrencies under the control of the Central Bank. These laws should simplify the integration of Russian digital financial assets (DFAs) with foreign systems.

The legislation introduces the concept of “foreign nominee holder of digital financial assets” and allows trading in foreign DFAs on Russian platforms. The Bank of Russia receives the right to prohibit the placement of certain issues of DFA. It is also possible to introduce special legal regulation for some decisions of the Central Bank. The bill provides for the creation of experimental legal regimes (EPR), including a platform for transactions with digital currencies within the national payment system (NPS) of the Central Bank.

Seven people arrested in Malaysia for mining using stolen electricity

Malaysian law enforcement authorities have detained seven people on suspicion of illegal Bitcoin mining using stolen electricity. Those arrested were three local residents and four foreigners aged from 30 to 74 years old, who had no previous convictions.

During the operation, 52 mining devices, two cars, three laptops and mobile phones were seized. The value of the confiscated property is estimated at 250,000 ringgit (~$57,050).

Earlier in July, a Malaysian Ministry of Energy official said that between 2018 and 2023, cryptocurrency miners stole RM3.4 billion (~$724.9 million) worth of electricity, noting that illegal activity in this area continues to expand.
